we have to let go in order to go

home.

A home is a place of residence or refuge. When it refers to a building, it is usually a place in which an individual or a family can live and store personal property. It is generally a place to provide safety and is used as a center from which people or animals base their daily activities. Most modern-day households contain sanitary facilities and a means of preparing food. Animals have their own homes as well, either living in the wild or shared with humans in a domesticated environment.

We have to let go in order to go home.

istanbul biennial 2013

Fictional Assignment:

Make an unique book about the Istanbul Biennial 2013, 1-7 pages, size doesn´t matter, hand made. It should show the mood and atmosphere of the event.

My book has 5 pages, each made from 2,5 mm cardboard. In the middle of the page you can find a blanked out square, that is getting smaller and turned with a 45° angle from page to page. The last page has a hand drawn (of course self designed) logo of the biennial, two times bigger than the last blanked out square to awaken interest in what happens on the last page.
The pages are painted in eastern and western colors, as Istanbul is right on the boarder of the cultural split-up. During these days the world will turn itself around that city, like the four squares, standing for the cardinal directions, do around the logo. the cover is made from 5 mm wood, dark stained with the size of 30 by 30 cm.

an unexpected session

Yeasterday night Aljoscha Christenhuß, a friend that studies media and film music at the ArtEZ Conservatorium came over for conferring about the cover of his band project ØNE. As we sat together having a few beers he started a digital painting by using the graphic tablet I bought from him about a year ago. Halfway he gave the painting to me to continue. Nice manner of working, whereas it was more incidentally scribbling and doodling. But I could imagine doing a few more, bigger projects that way..

failing

Assignment:

In the next four weeks we are going to build a long sequence of words and images, eventually creating one sentence.
The procedure is as follows: The first student chooses a word and forwards this to the second student via email, (s)he adds another word and sends the two words to the third student, who adds a third word and forwards this to the fourth student. By this, a sentence slowly evolves and we carry on until we reach the final student in the list, who will finish our sentence.

For your own word, take time to find one (or more?) newspaper image(s) from your scheduled day (or, vice versa, find a word to combine with a newspaper image you want to use). Play around with word/image combinations which seem fitting, interesting, thought provoking, jarring, etc.
Arrange word and image on a 410 x 280 mm piece of paper, landscape or portrait. Type must be centred (vertically and horizontally) but you are free to choose all other ingredients such as typeface, corps size, type direction, colour, image crop, full-colour or black and white, etc.

The day I got the sentence was january 27. The sentence until then was:
Security requires big support especially when dutch people learn inappropiate non-essential bullying language and try... - I added "failing".
I had a skip through different newspapers and found my fitting image in BILD (what a wonder). It depicts two teens kissing, for an upcoming RTL soap.

NEWS GOTHIC MT

Choose the typeface you like the most. Make a poster by using its letters only. Next to simply advertising this typeface, the poster should also include information about its origin. Please start off completely analogue: sketch, draw, erase, tweak, play around with pen and paper.

istanbul biennial 2013

vulpes #1

For the lately established label Vulpes Clothing from Stuttgart I got the opportunity to design some tee shirt prints.
These are the first ideas, by guessing what could meet their interest or respectively just where I found the most fun in.
On the bottom there are 3 shirt models of how it could look like, but they are not representative for the label. They more function as an orientation for me.
Unfortunately the pictures are all screenshots as problems occurred with uploading jpgs created with photoshop, pretty weird.

motion #1

At the Polaroid Factory (now "Impossible") in Enschede you can buy broken films for a reduced prize.

I appreciate that effect it brings with and that its always surprising what finally happens with the picture.
