first impressions // exchange artez arnhem

So, the first 3 weeks of my exchange in arnhem are over - I am getting more and more into the work flow. My expectations in concern of ArtEZ Arnhem beeing a strict school have been totally met - I still can´t tell if thats the thing I need for this semester or not, but in fact there should be nothing wrong with that. I was told the organization should be way better here compared to the AKI, but the fact that I didn´t even get a mail or anything that gives me information about the upcoming semester before I started and the fact, that the frist 3 days nobody could tell me where I need to go, in which class i actually am and what I need to do to fix that, sort of let me doubt - I dont know - maybe I should have shown more initiative before the study starts. I also need to say that I could feel the prejudices of Arnhem and Enschede in a pretty arrogant  way, although I think that it wasn´t meant to be offensive. But in my opinion it is simply everything else than an open manner to welcome foreign students. I also haven't got the opportunity to introduce myself to the class which made it a bit difficult to get in contact with the fellow students - for some of them it took two weeks to even realize I am there. But, to say it in one sentence - I had my difficulties in the beginning but its all getting better and I´m working on it.

The third year students have two specializations this semester - typography and design research. I chose the typography class, as this is the direction I wanna get better in. I´ve got pretty good docents where I can learn a lot from - although it is a completely different way of working / dealing with an assignment: the research part gets a lot more attention.

I´ve got 6 different subjects:

Network cultures, data place, bachelor thesis help, and 3 typography lessons.

In "network cultures" we need to develop a campaign for Cheyenne, a small city but actually the capital of the U.S. state Wyoming, that experienced an internet phenomenon a few weeks ago where it came out to the open that the whole network of China runs via one house. This unimposing small house belongs to Wyoming Corporate Service and Sophidea, companies that are specialized in switchboards and where it is possible to make up a corporation without beeing responsible for its actions - as the state Wyoming hasn´t got any law that enforce the incorporation to hand out names of their customers in case of a crime scene. So this house is the address of more than 2000 "shelf-"companies coming from the whole world beeing easily able to betray and cheat.

In "Data Place" we were given an individual place mark in and around Arnhem where we need to find something interesting we could work further - a pretty broad and open assignment. My place mark is the market square in Arnhem and as i wanna learn more about typography i went to focus on the market signs. It might be a good opportunity to create a new font for either one of the stands or the whole market.

The "bachelor thesis help" is a fantastic thing to have. I actually need to write my thesis in my fourth year, but as the students in Arnhem go for exchange in their fourth year they need to start writing now. I gonna follow that subject as good as possible to save work for next year.

In the first typography course we are making a book. From the very beginning till the very end. - A subject where I expect to learn the most. The assignment is to pick an ebook from which source ever and to design it new - as if it would be released in 2014. My book is called "Mind, Motion and Monism" from George Romanes and was first released in 1895.

The second typography course assignment is called "uncreative design". The goal of the assignment is to redesign the work of one artist according to the methods of an other artists. The first artist is the musician and composer Brian Eno. The other artist is Kenneth Goldsmith. Kenneth Goldsmith is a conceptual poet who defines his work as “uncreative writing”. He makes use of existing texts — in print and online alike. By applying techniques of appropriation and sampling, he follows a process in which writing proceeds of self-induced formal constraints. Brian Eno deals with the issue of creativity quite differentely. Collaborating with Peter Schmidt, he created the ‘Oblique Strategies’ in 1975, a deck of cards designed to help them break creative blocks by encouraging lateral thinking. They then published the cards and made that system available to a wide audience.

The third typography course is a pretty fun one I suppose. The assignment is to create a neologism and make it the cover of a book, a magazine, a poster, ... all step by step. The course already started and I am stepping in there after the vacation next week.
