polaroid weirdos

i accidently dropped my polaroid camera, so i took a photo to check if it is still working. in fact, it seemed to do not cause there came no photo out of the cam. instead i took another one and all of a sudden two picture came out the same time. I used a black and white film, 600, which makes the result seem even weirder..

kogerveld // city portrait

Kogerveld is a district of Zaanstad, located a few kilometers in the north of Amsterdam. Outstanding was that smell of cacao that seems to be everywhere around due to cargills chocolate factory in the industrial area. I tried to capture the types of people I saw on the street and how they must actually feel right now. The final result is a series of 9 images.

Feed me is a one minute animation about water privatization. It depicts a jogging person in first-person perspective that has run out of water and fortunately spots a water fountain. It is constantly running but by the time the protagonist bends himself down to take a sip it stops all of a sudden. After trying a few times and wondering himself about that strange issue he realizes that the guy sitting next to it. He is wearing a suit with a Nesté Logo and  is navigating the fountain with a remote control saying: "Just gimme a dollar and I´ll make that thing work for ya." 
The thirsty runner has no other option than giving him that dollar and instead of putting it into his wallet, he all of a sudden eats it - and turns on the fountain.

graffiti // erkende kunst

Gedachten bij het vinden van een onderwerp voor het scriptie aankomend jaar.

Sinds dat ik ongeveer 12 jaar oud ben, ben ik gefascineerd door graffiti.
De kleuren, de vorm, het openbare, en het feit dat je woorden die zelf al een betekenis hebben ook nog op een manier kan schrijven die deze betekenis ondersteunt, ik vond het geweldig.

Kortom: ik raakte gefascineerd door typografie.

Tijdens de middelbare school was er niks belangrijkers voor mij dan overal mijn pseudoniem achter te laten, uren lang styles te onderzoeken en te kijken hoe ik mijn letters meer flow zou kunnen geven, hoe ik ze leven in kon blazen.

Vrij snel begreep ik, dat er wel regels achter staan hoe een letter wel of niet uit mag zien, dat er op een of andere manier een basis bestaat waar letters op zijn gebouwd.

Een paar weken geleden vond ik een serie terug, die ik ooit voor mijn sollicitatie voor de AKI had gemaakt: een step-by-step analyse hoe ik tot mijn style kom.

Door graffiti leerde ik twee van mijn beste vrienden kennen, ik kwam er achter wat het betekend om gezamelijk een concept te ontwikkelen, acties te plannen en als team te werken. Maar waarvoor we het eigenlijk deden, waarom we elk weekend gevaar liepen ons toekomst op het spel te zetten in vorm van illegaal bezig te zijn voor de anonyme roem, dat snapte niemand zo goed. En om eerlijk te zijn, ik heb het antwoord nog steeds niet gevonden.

Inmiddels ben ik ermee min of meer gestopt, doe nog af en toe wat klusjes bij mij thuis of bij vrienden, ik heb besloten om grafisch ontwerper te worden. Maar ik vraag me af, hoe sommige artiesten het wel voor elkaar hebben gekregen om hun werk in succesvolle galerieen en bekende musea te krijgen, en dat op een vloeiende manier, zonder van hun medium te wisselen.

Smash 137 is een voorbeeld van een kunstenaar, die op de straat is begonnen en het voor elkaar heeft gekregen, zijn letters in een jarenlange ontwikkeling op een zo geniale manier te abstraheren, dat zijn werk tegenwoordig voor duizende van euros wordt verkocht.

Maar waar ligt de grens? Wanneer is graffiti het waard om tentoongesteld te worden? Waneer is graffiti überhaupt graffiti? Waar ligt de scheiding tussen klassieke graffiti, die als ware ook maar een abstrahering van de gewone typografie is, en erkende kunst?

Fictional assignment: co-creatie. Invention of a product that makes it easier for a specific group of interest to follow their hobby. Subsequently its visualization.
People smoking marihuana need to deal with the problem of being only able to buy their supplies in different shops, such as long cigarette papers, a bunch of tips and tobacco, which by the way gets dry pretty quick as you need longer to finish a package. so i thought: why not having everything in one pack?
The company i chose is NIL, because for one thing i enjoy their house style pretty much and for another thing it is one of the first german cigarette brands that back in the 1920, according Wikipedia, even contained 8 % of marihuana.

after hrs #1

polaroid 600 - broken film that has been through several periods of heat and cold. very intense color with a tendency to 3d. By the time I took the picture the outside temperature was about 3 °C and instead of warming up the cam I shot the photo immediately. Thats where the treelike interference on the bottom right comes from.

during the process of making stickers for the exhibition DE ∞ FASE, trying out different color combinations, i decided to create some gifs with the various results.
while playing the first gif in safari i noticed an interesting interference, which i captured with quicktime player, edited with after effects and then converted to a second gif.
